Support Veteran Home Guardians

Help us keep showing up for veterans

A useful referral can open a door. A regular visit can remind someone they haven’t been forgotten. VHG visits isolated veterans in nursing homes and helps families and care teams find practical support.

Your support helps sustain that work and reach more veterans and communities.

This guide is free to use. Donations are optional.

A simple handoff for staff and families

  1. Ask about military service. Was the resident a veteran, or the surviving spouse of a veteran?
  2. Offer a county office referral. With the resident’s or authorized representative’s agreement, help them contact the appropriate office.
  3. Explain the need. Ask for a benefits screening; mention nursing home care, existing benefits and any difficulty traveling. Ask about phone appointments or facility visits.
  4. Agree on follow-up. Identify who will call back and when. Keep notes in the facility’s usual system.
A useful opening for the call

“I’m helping a veteran or surviving spouse who lives in a care facility in [county]. They’d like help reviewing possible benefits. What is the intake process, what documents are needed, and what options are there if they cannot travel?”

Ask about discharge records, current VA benefit letters, care expenses and payer information. Missing records? Use the National Archives resource or ask the county office for help. Discuss private documents directly with the office.
